Vegan French Toast Recipe Tips
Below I am answering some of the most common questions I thought I'd get for this recipe!
How do you make French toast without egg?
For this specific recipe, I use Just Eggs as a vegan egg substitute, but you could also try:
- A flax meal egg
- A chia seed egg
- Other egg replacers
- Applesauce
How much Just Egg equals a chicken egg?
If you are looking to replace eggs in other baking endeavors, typically, 3 tablespoons of Just Egg is equivalent to one chicken egg. For this recipe, we use ½ cup of Just Egg, which is about 3 chicken eggs.
What's the best bread for French toast?
If you decide to make this recipe on a whim and only have regular sandwich bread on hand, go for it! However, if you are going all out, run to the store and get either Texas toast, ciabatta, or French bread. Ideally, you want a thick piece of bread that will soak in all the batter and not fall apart.
Why do you add flour to the French toast batter?
Flour is my not-so-secret ingredient that ensures a drool-worthy piece of French toast! It makes the liquid that you soak the bread in thicker and more of a batter. This results in a fluffy and delicious French toast.
What toppings go best on French toast?
There are so many great options - maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, coconut, Nutella, whipped cream, nuts, and/or jam... to name a few! I'd love to hear what you prefer to top your French toast with, so comment below with your pick.
Can you save this French toast for later?
This vegan French toast keeps very well! Store it in the refrigerator for up to three days, or wrap it in plastic wrap and store in the freezer for up to two months. I recommend throwing them in the regular oven or a toaster oven at 350° for 10 minutes or until heated through.
This vegan French toast with Just Egg recipe is going to be your new favorite breakfast because it is:

- Fluffy
- Only 10 ingredients

Description
A simple recipe for vegan French toast with Just Egg that only requires 10 ingredients. Perfect for a Mother's Day brunch!
Ingredients
- 10 slices of thick bread*
- ½ cup Just Egg
- 1 cup plant-based milk (I used Good Karma Flaxmilk because it's super creamy)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon agave
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar
- ¼ teaspoons salt
- ¼ cup flour
- 4 tablespoons vegan butter
- Topping options: maple syrup, powdered sugar, fresh fruit, Nutella, whipped cream, jam
Instructions
- Whisk together the eggs, milk, vanilla extract, agave, cinnamon, brown sugar, and salt together in a low, flat-bottomed baking dish.
- Once combined, slowly add in the flour and whisk until completely smooth.
- Soak each piece of bread for about 15-20 seconds on each side.
- Heat a nonstick pan or skillet over medium heat, and melt a little butter in the pan.
- When the butter starts to bubble, place two pieces of toast in the pan. Cook until golden brown for about 3-4 minutes on each side.
- Serve warm and with any toppings of your choice!
Notes
Texas Toast, Ciabatta, or French Bread would all work great in this recipe. You want a sturdy bread that is about ¾-inch thick, so the bread doesn't get completely soggy and fall apart when you soak it in the egg mixture.
I find you get the best result if you wipe the pan clean between each cooking session and add a bit more butter to grease the pan.
